CMF II Portfolio Companies

CytoPherx

Ann Arbor, Michigan

CytoPherx has developed a patented hollow-fiber dialysis filter that sequesters and deactivates leukocytes in patient’s blood system to treat inflammation.

The initial market focus is acute renal failure.

Hardcore Computer

Rochester, Minnesota

Hardcore Computer has developed a proprietary technology that uses patented liquid submersion cooling to remove heat from computer hardware. Hardcore Computer's liquid submersion technology can be used to cool a number of computing platforms including data centers, servers, storage systems and laptops/tablets.

The technology offers a number of benefits: (1) keeps hardware components cooler than conventional systems, which enhances component reliability and longevity; (2) increases maximum system performance as components are able to run about 30% faster; and (3) is the only liquid cooling technology currently available that dissipates heat from all of the electronic components in rack-based servers.

Therapeutic Proteins (TPI)

Chicago, Illinois

The patents for several of the leading biological drugs are expiring and these drugs represent the basis for treating cancer, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, and other serious diseases. The leading biological drugs include filgrastim (GCSF) and erythropoietin (EPO), drugs whose branded versions generate approximately $20 billion in annual sales worldwide. The generic versions of these drugs are currently being sold in many countries outside the US, but the approval process for biogeneric drugs in the US has not been finalized by the FDA. Dr. Sarf Niazi, the technical leader for TPI, is a member of the FDA committee reviewing biogeneric drug regulations, and he believes approvals for biogeneric drugs will be viable within three years.

TPI has established a manufacturing facility for both GCSF and EPO in Chicago, which incorporates technology that represents a major improvement over the current manufacturing processes, and has an order backlog for these products with customers located in countries where biogeneric drugs are already being sold. TPI has the option of expanding the facility to add manufacturing for several other biogeneric drugs that have been developed.
